I was quite busy lately and could not shoot street

I was quite busy lately and could not shoot street as I wanted to, but always carrying a camera will provide pictures in the busiest of times, as long as I keep my eyes open. This is a photo of a diner I have walked by hundreds of times but on this particular day light and color were a perfect match.

It is a rather abstract street photograph, featuring only color and shape. Thus, it reminds me a of constructivist painting.

Ich möchte vom ganzen Herzen all den Menschen danken, die sich die Zeit nahmen, um mit mir an einem frühlingshaften Freitagabend über Kunst und Kirche zu sprechen. Die St. Meinolf Gemeinde hat wirklich tolle Arbeit geleistet, um diese Kunstausstellung und die anschließenden Gespräche zu ermöglichen und auch dafür bin ich sehr dankbar.

Die Bilder sind bis zum 24.3. in der St. Marienkirche in Hagen ausgestellt und werden anschließend auf der @revierkunst gezeigt. Ich freue mich schon auf weitere interessante Gespräche.

English: My series "Faith Forgotten" has been on display in the beautiful St. Meinolf - Church where I had a chance to talk to so many people about art and religion. It was a great experience to show the photos in a church and not in an art exhibition.

Great news! I am very honored to have received an

Great news! I am very honored to have received an honorable mention in the Tokyo Foto Awards for "The Resurrection", the third and final part of my series "Faith Forgotten".

After a 1st place last year, this honorable mention means a lot to me since it is proof of consistancy. Many can create one great piece of art, but it is much harder to make a second and third one. I believe that being consistent and creating quality work over a longer period of time is one of the greatest challenges as an artist.

As always I want to thank all the people in front and behind the camera who helped me make this piece of art happen. Such a huge project cannot be done by one person and I am very lucky in having so many great friends who are always there for me.

The photos of the trilogy are intended to be seen as huge fine art prints, not on small phone displays. If you are interested in seeing the trilogy as intended and would like to hear my ideas behind it, you can do so on Friday in the St. Meinolf - Church in Hagen. I would be very happy if you dropped by.

One of my most memorable experiences ever was the

One of my most memorable experiences ever was the hike up the holy Maasai mountain Oldonyo Lengai (2856m).

Considered the hardest one day climb in Africa, we started round about midnight for an incredibly steep climb of 2000m. Unexpectedly, we climbed too fast and needed to sleep in a small cave near the summit waiting for sunrise.

Once on top, I heard what sounded like an incredibly loud waterfall, but was acually a pool full of lava. Imagine my feeling sitting there under a sky full of stars at the ridge of the crater where the God of the Maasai is supposed to live and seeing the lava exploding and splashing below. I think this is what painters of the Romantic period called the sublime.

P.S. The little dot the 5th picture is me, just to give you an impression of how huge the crater is. The 6th photo shows the shadow the volcanoe is throwing after sunrise.

P.P.S. I would have loved to take some amazing drone photos, but my drone was confiscated at the airport. What a shame, the images would have been incredible :(

Some classic drone shots from our trip to the Seychelles last summer. Personally I prefer more action when going on holidays but it was nice to relax for few days after having driven through Uganda and Tanzania.

P.S. that tiny dot in the first and last photo is my wife whom I had to argue with every single time I took this kind of shots 😂

Humorous street photos do not get much visibility on Instagram since the small mobile phone display makes it very hard to spot an oftentimes small element necessary to get the joke.
This is why I wanted to create a few posts dedicated to this subgenre of street photography and show many funny street photos I have taken over the last few years. Some of them you might have already seen, others have never been published before.

ich habe tolle Neuigkeiten und möchte euch zu einer spannenden Veranstaltung einladen!

Nach über einem Jahr Arbeit kann ich endlich meine Trilogie "Faith Forgotten" auf großformatigen Fine Art - Drucken präsentieren, und welcher Ort wäre dazu besser geeignet, als ein Gotteshaus?

Am 7.3.2025 werde ich in der St. Meinolf Gemeinde in Hagen mit dem Pfarrer Dirk Salzmann über Kunst und Religion sprechen und stehe auch dem Publikum Rede und Antwort.

Doch dies ist nicht alles! Falls ihr schon immer wissen wolltet, wer die spannenden Menschen auf diesen Fotos sind und wie sie so ticken, ist es eure Gelegenheit, sie persönlich kennen zu lernen. Sie werden auch vor Ort sein und ihr erhaltet ganz intime Einblicke zur Entstehung und der Bilder und der Arbeit am Set, die, so viel sei an dieser Stelle schon verraten, für uns alle sehr herausfordernd war.

Ich würde mich riesig freuen, diesen Abend mit möglichst vielen von euch zu teilen, also schaut vorbei. Ich verspreche euch, es wird sich lohnen!

An aspect of editing often overlooked is the white balance. Look, how by just adjusting two sliders, the white balance and the tone, the mood of the image changes dramatically.

In cinema, white balance, or the color of light, is often used to transport a certain mood and this is what I also try to do with my photography.

A few words about what I call "the joy of seeing".

In face to face conversations with other photographers but also in online discussions I hear people often complain about the impossibility to take good photos in their small boring town. I think this is a really bad attitude and some kind of excuse for not going out and trying their best.

Sure, it way easier to capture fascinating images in Havana, New York or London, but eben in the tiniest of towns there is something to photograph, you only have to go out and look.

The photos here are made during short visits to my parent's home in Minden, taking leisurely walks with my mother. Moreover, they are all taken in one single neighbourhood covering maybe 2 square km. The last one is even shot from my bedroom window.

This is what I call the joy of seeing. If you really look and wait and look some more, you eventually will find something beautiful. If you enjoy the process, you will get results.

Dear friends, I have incredible news!

I would have laughed if somebody had told me in 2020, when I bought my first camera, that one day I will be a winner at the incredibly prestigious and competitive Travel Photographer of the Year. And yet, this is what has just happened. I am one of the winners of the Emerging Talent Award - category.

For this category, I had to compile a portfolio of 10 images, which had to cover various genres of travel photorgraphy, such as street, wildlife, landscape, documentary or portrait photography. In one word, one had to show that one is a versatile photogorapher across different genres and topics. Swipe to see the photos I included into my portfolio.
