I saw Chris while walking the streets of Semporna and instantly I knew that he might be a great subject to photograph. Fortunately he spoke English quite well making it easy for me to give him some directions. This turned out to be one my favorite portraits of the last year. Thanks a lot, Chris!

Photographing Semporna's harbour I saw these guys

Photographing Semporna's harbour I saw these guys sorting and packaging fresh caught fish and asked them if I could enter their boat to take a few photos. The guys were super excited about someone wanting to photograph them and invited me to come over. Soon fishermen from other boats called for me to also visit their boats and I ended jumping from boat to boat and taking pictures - some of my most beautiful memories from last year regarding photography.

Bajau Brothers - The Bajau Laut, sometimes also called "sea gypsies", are a people living on small islands or even houses built on water in the sea between Borneo and the Philippines. I would have loved to spend a whole day in one of their communities, but the constant danger of an upcoming storm did not allow to travel that far in a local fisherman's small boat.

Ice Plant Worker - Semporna, 2022.

This factory and the workers there combined with the soft pastel colors immediately caught my attention, but shooting this portrait turned out really difficult. The young man in the picture did not speak a word of English and was really shy about being photographed. It took time, many hand gestures and some translation by his colleagues to finally get the image I had in mind.

Yesterday I woke up too early and taking the obligatory look outside the window on the way to the bathroom I saw how foggy the morning was.
Immediately I got dressed, grabbed my camera a went out shooting before the fog lifted.
Amazing, how the totally unspectacular "Westpark"in the middle of the town can change into a dreamy and magical place with the right weather condition.
